Release Train Engineer

Experience

5–10 years of relevant experience in Agile delivery, program management, or enterprise software development.


Role Overview

The Release Train Engineer (RTE) is a servant leader and coach for an Agile Release Train (ART), responsible for guiding and supporting the train to deliver value consistently and predictably. The RTE operates at the program level, facilitating alignment, execution, and continuous improvement across multiple Agile teams in a large, cross-functional environment.

The RTE plays a critical role in navigating complexity, removing impediments, managing risks and dependencies, and ensuring the ART delivers on business objectives. This role is accountable for the overall planning, coordination, execution, and delivery of value through the program.


Key Responsibilities

Agile Release Train Leadership & Facilitation

  • Serve as the primary servant leader and coach for the Agile Release Train (ART).

  • Facilitate ART events including PI Planning, Scrum of Scrums, PO Syncs, System Demos, Inspect & Adapt workshops, and retrospectives.

  • Foster collaboration, alignment, and transparency across Agile teams, Product Management, Architecture, and business stakeholders.

Program Execution & Delivery

  • Own and manage the end-to-end program execution, ensuring commitments are met and value is delivered predictably.

  • Track and communicate program metrics, progress, risks, and dependencies.

  • Partner with Product Management and System Architects to support backlog readiness, sequencing, and delivery planning.

Risk, Dependency & Impediment Management

  • Proactively identify, manage, and escalate risks, impediments, and dependencies impacting the ART.

  • Facilitate dependency resolution across teams and with external stakeholders.

  • Drive problem-solving and decision-making at the program level.

Continuous Improvement & Coaching

  • Coach teams, Product Owners, and leaders in SAFe, Agile, and Lean principles.

  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, learning, and innovation.

  • Facilitate Inspect & Adapt outcomes and ensure improvement actions are prioritized and executed.

Stakeholder & Leadership Engagement

  • Act as a key liaison between delivery teams and senior leadership.

  • Communicate program status, risks, and outcomes clearly and effectively.

  • Support organizational change and Agile maturity at scale.


Required Qualifications

  • 5–10 years of experience in Agile delivery, program management, or related roles.

  • Proven experience supporting or leading Agile Release Trains in a SAFe environment.

  • Strong facilitation, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.

  • Experience managing complex programs with multiple teams and dependencies.

  • Deep understanding of Agile, Lean, and SAFe principles.


Preferred Qualifications

  • SAFe certifications (RTE, SPC, or equivalent).

  • Background as a Scrum Master, Agile Coach, or Program Manager.

  • Experience working in large-scale, enterprise software environments.

  • Familiarity with Agile tooling (Jira, Azure DevOps, Rally, etc.).
